Alistair Perreira and the social change

Hundreds of rapes, and a thousand more murders in a day.... robberies, burglaries, thefts, frauds and what not...
That is the Indian 'law and order' situation for you. Crime is so prevalent that the wise indian learnt to ignore it and move on. Crime is a part of the system in this country. Infact Crime is the system in this country!
With such a dismal conviction rate - shoddy investigations and corrupt law-protectors - what else can we expect?
Then why does society react so strongly when a Jessica Lal, Priyadarshini Mattoo or a Manjunath is killed.. why does the society bay for the blood of vikas yadavs and Alistair Perreiras?
The answer, I think, lies in the way Americans react to crime. America is among the most crime ridden countries in the world. But only crimes against whites, and educated blacks get highlighted. High speed chases, gun fights on network... public imagination catches it all and feasts on the gory. And the only crime that is shown on TV gets highlighted.
India too is catching the trend. Only the crime against the middle class and the rich gets highlighted on TV because that is the Target Group for those TV stations. The poor man never owns a TV, even if he does, he never switches on the news channels and let's assume he does, but frankly who cares?
